A city on the southern Black Sea coast, Trebizond became one of the Byzantine successor states that emerged after the Latin capture of Constantinople in 1204, remaining stubbornly independent rather than reuniting with the restored empire. It outlasted all other Byzantine successor states, holding out for seven years after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Its final surrender on 15 August 1461 marked the extinction of the last Byzantine throne.
