A cousin of Andronicus who seized the throne in 1185 after killing the officer sent to arrest him and rallying the people at the Hagia Sophia. His reign began promisingly with a victory over the Sicilians, but descended into reckless spending, crushing taxes, sold offices, and military failure in Bulgaria. He was deposed, blinded, and imprisoned by his own brother Alexius, and eventually died in prison after being briefly restored as a broken co-emperor alongside his son Alexius IV.
