The name Eudosia was borne by two distinct figures in Byzantine history. The first was the wife of Emperor Heraclius, crowned alongside him in a celebrated ceremony, whose early death led Heraclius to the controversial decision to marry his niece Martina. The second was a consort of Emperor Michael III who, after being separated from him in his youth, was later compelled upon Basil to marry so that Michael could keep her close to court; rumor held that her first son Leo was Michael's child, and following Michael's assassination Basil crowned her empress.
