The remarkable Doge of Venice, in his middle 80s and completely blind but possessing boundless energy and immense shrewdness. He masterminded the diversion of the Fourth Crusade, first to Zara and then to Constantinople, cleverly exploiting the crusaders' debt to Venice and welcoming the fugitive Alexius Angelus as a tool to capture the great city. He personally turned the tide at the sea walls of Constantinople by leaping from his ship and planting the banner of St. Mark. He was buried in the Hagia Sophia, and in 1453 the Turks mistook his tomb for a saint's and threw his bones to the dogs.
