Commissioned by Photius along with his brother Methodius to bring Christianity to the Bulgarians, Moravians, and Rus, Constantine took the Slavic name Cyril and, recognizing that the Slavs lacked a written language, devised the Cyrillic alphabet based on Greek characters. Though the mission to the Moravians failed, his alphabetic creation became the basis of writing systems for most of Eastern Europe.
