The second Rashidun Caliph, Omar is associated with the Arab conquest of Alexandria from the Byzantines, during which he retook the city and razed its walls; he is also attributed, likely apocryphally, with ordering the burning of the Library of Alexandria's contents in public furnaces over the course of six months. A later Caliph of the same name led Saracen expeditions into Asia Minor and Armenia before being defeated and killed by the Byzantine general Bardas. That defeat marked the first significant check on Islamic military expansion in nearly a century.
